Tutoring—Your Child’s Advantage

Photo

The concept of tutoring services is not new.  Throughout history students have had the advantage of being tutored.  From ancient times to modern times, tutors have provided educational benefits to individuals.  Cleopatra, Socrates, Elizabeth I, Beethoven, Louisa May Alcott, Albert Einstein, and Michael Jordan all had tutors.

Today, our educational services are challenged to provide the optimal individual advantages that our children deserve.  The explosion of information that we enjoy requires that our children have the educational background to enable them to keep up with the rapid pace of the information age.  The rapid pace can be stressful.  Some children do well in stressful situations, but others need a more nurturing and individuated program to excel.

Under the testing provisions of No Child Left Behind, even our teachers feel the stress of the rapid pace of the information age.  Teachers are expected to require all children to work towards the same standards in a fairly uniform manner.  Those children who require more time, or a different approach, or a simple re-look at information are often left behind during the ever-quickening pace of the daily classroom routine.  Generally, teachers express regret about this and attempt to remediate those children who appear to be below the standard.  But time is short during a school day, and classes are large.  Children are shuffled from one subject to the next and from one isolated lesson to another lesson.   They aren’t given the time to savor what they are exposed to or to generalize their new knowledge.  It causes children to wallow in “bits” of information instead of swimming in a stream of knowledge.  Even those teachers with good intentions are hard-pressed to give each child the attention he/she should have.  Thus, the unintended consequence of working so hard towards uniform standards is that children have less of the education that will allow them to succeed in their futures.

More and more parents turn to tutoring to provide the enriched curriculum that their children deserve.  Those children who need more time to solidify their learning, and those children who need to refresh their skills will have more confidence in school and flourish with tutorial help.   Those children who are on level, according to their tests in school, or who are gifted, also benefit from tutorial services.  Having someone who is skilled augment and enrich your child’s classroom instruction will encourage your child to seek a more profound understanding of subject material. Those children who complain that school is boring, or that the teacher has no time to answer a question, will be well-served with the attention that tutorial services can give them.  A child’s talents should be encouraged and nurtured.

As children progress from elementary school to middle and high schools, the need for tutoring services becomes more evident.  The competition for excellent grades and   acceptance to colleges is important and often stressful to students.  The individual attention that most youngsters need to accomplish excellent grades is less available in today’s schools than before.  Classes in secondary schools are large, often taught by teachers who do not have enough preparation time, and frequently interrupted by bells or announcements.  Students at this level need the advantages of tutorial services to allow them to learn challenging subject matter in a comfortable, nonthreatening atmosphere.   The benefit of tutorial services to provide the attention to the student, the time to listen to the student’s question, to fine tune the student’s understanding of the material, and to encourage the student to continue on a path of accomplishment are your child’s rights.  Tutoring is your child’s advantage in achieving his/her goals.
